The power of a positive mental attitude: 3 top tips

Did anyone else used to get really annoyed when you were having a bit of a bad day and someone would say ‘Positive Mental Attitude!’ – I used to just want to have a grump and for people to listen to my complaints and agree with me. But as much as it pains me to admit it, they may have been right. A lot of things we come to face can be altered by our perspective, and having the power to do this can make all the difference both on a day to day and a more long term basis.


This is not to say that bad things don’t happen to people, sometimes things aren’t ok and sometimes you just need to cry/grieve/scream in order to go through the motions. I think that for me it’s really important to acknowledge when something bad has happened rather than bottling it up, as the sooner you get the emotion out the sooner you can gain closure and try and move on. I’m by no means an expert, but as a former negative nelly I thought I’d share a few things that help me out of a slump whenever I need a bit of positivity:

Find or make a happy playlist

I find it amazing how much a song can influence my mood, it’s so easy to let your negativity spiral if you sit with Sam Smith and Adele on repeat (as much as I love them both, they can be a bit depressing!). So, be prepared with a playlist full of happy songs, cringey songs, singalongs and songs that make you want to dance then it’s ready whenever you need a boost. Another thing I try and do is fill the playlist with songs that remind me of really good memories, to remind me that things aren’t all that bad afterall!


Buy some flowers

I recently read Light is the new black so I can’t take any credit for this at all but I thought it was such a good idea so wanted to share it with you. If I have a bunch of flowers in the kitchen my mood is instantly lifted, there’s just something about the colours and the smell that make the house feel so homely. It’s amazing how something so simple can have such a positive influence so the writer Rebecca said she now sets aside a small budget so that there are always flowers in her home. I’d say this is a small price to pay for something that makes you feel so good! Also… you don’t need to wait for someone to buy them for you, treat yourself!


Get outside

It is easy to get wrapped up in bad things that happen and I’ve been known to convince myself that it’s the worst thing ever so perspective is key. Getting outside of the house allows you to reassess your problems, see them through new eyes and maybe you’ll think of solutions you’d never considered! One thing which I also think has a huge influence on my mood is how much sleep I’ve had and getting fresh air always helps me sleep better, so there are indirect benefits too.
