Staying active in Budapest

I’m back home again after a long weekend in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, it was my first time in the city and I can honestly say it was beautiful. There was so much to see and do and we were really lucky that the weekend we visited happened to be a national festival over there meaning so many extra cool stuff to see! If you ever get an opportunity to visit on 20th August then definitely do, it’s an amazing weekend with some delicious markets and a firework display!



The lovely people at MandM direct have challenged me to share with you how I stay active on my holidays. Firstly, I do not believe we all absolutely have to exercise every day of a holiday, quite the opposite, I think that if you are someone who does a lot of exercise as part of their usual routine then exercising on holiday is not essential at all and it can actually be good to give your body a break! Holidays are perfect for switching off and not everyone loves sitting still for an entire week so staying active can have real mental benefits too. Staying active, especially where holidays are concerned, means so much more than getting in the gym and there are so many other ways to stay active which you can incorporate into your schedule, making sure you get the most out of the gorgeous things to see too!


  1. Walk

Honestly just walk everywhere. At home because I have an office job, I really struggle to get my recommended step count in and if I don’t go to the gym or add an extra walk into my day, my step count can be as low as 3000! For this reason I love having the opportunity to get out and walk everywhere on holidays. To plan a route, I look up the sights I’d like to see in advance and then plot out a route on a map to get a rough idea of where we’d like to go. I like to do this before I leave the hotel so that know roughly where I am going and can focus on the sights and sounds of the city instead of being stuck behind Google maps on my phone the whole time!




  1. Climb

The best views, I find, are generally from up high and its such an amazing way to see any city. The added benefit of seeing these great views of course is that it takes a bit of effort to get to the top (which of course makes it so much more worth it when you get there!) There were 302 stairs to the top of St Stephen’s Basilica which we climbed on a super hot day but it was so worth it – the views were incredible and I did feel a little sense of achievement getting myself to the top!

  1. Bike tours

Another way of seeing the sights in a slightly different way. It can be hard to fit in all the amazing things you need to see in a weekend without running yourself into the ground but a bike tour can often fit in many of the ‘must-see’ sights in a matter of hours whilst also getting in a bit of a workout cycling around the city. I have to say, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this unless you are a competent cyclist as it can be a bit scary cycling across busy interchanges especially in European cities but if you are confident to do it then it’s definitely worth the investment of time!



  1. Hotel gym

As I said I really don’t think this is essential but if you do fancy it then why not! At home, my gym sessions tend to be quite rushed as I’m always there before work but when I was away gym sessions had no time pressure and I felt like I got a lot more out of it for that reason! I largely had the gym to myself which was great for some mental headspace and as I wasn’t in a rush, I made sure I had a proper stretch at the end which made me feel tonnes better!
